Canada brings back random tests

New concern for travellers has been raised by Canada’s decision to introduce random Covid testing for fully vaccinated passengers arriving by air. The move will apply to those arriving at four major airports – Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal. If they test positive, travellers must self isolate for the following 10 days.

Passengers who have been selected will be informed by email within 15 minutes of completing their customs declaration. Testing is off the airport, “either via an in-person appointment at select testing provider locations and pharmacies, or a virtual appointment for a self-swab test”.

The Canadian Government paused mandatory random testing on 11 June. It’s latest move suggests it would be wise for would be visitors to take tests shortly before departure, reducing the risk of losing a big chunk of the holiday in isolation.
